Ptáci dosahují různých velikostí. Rozdíly ve velikosti ptáků nejsou tak velké jako u plazů nebo savců. Největší ptáci převyšují svojí hmotností ty nejmenší jen asi 45tisíckrát (létavé formy jen 10tisíckrát), zatímco např. u savců je tento vztah v poměru 1:60 miliónům. Za nejmenší ptáky světa se považují kolibříci (hmotnost 1,5 - 2,5 g) a pěvci. Zpravidla za vůbec nejmenšího je považován kolibřík kubánský (Calypte helenae), který i s ocasem měří 6 cm a váží 1,5 g. Z našich ptáků jsou nejmenší králíčci (Regulus spp.), kteří mají hmotnost 4,5-7 g. Největší z žijících ptáků je pštros dvouprstý (2,5 m výšky, hmotnost až 150 kg). Z létavých pak někteří albatrosi (rozpětí křídel až 3,5 m), kondor velký (rozpětí 3 m) nebo orel mořský (rozpětí až 2,5 m). Ještě větší byly některé vymřelé druhy. Novozélandští ptáci moa (klad Dinornithidae) měřili na výšku až 3,6 m a vážili až 250 kg. Madagaskarští běžci řádu Aepyornithiformes byli nižší (3 m), ale těžší (500 kg) a snášeli také vůbec největší vejce, velká 25 × 34 cm a těžká 10 kg (odpovídá 7 pštrosím vejcím). Z létavých byl největší Argentavis magnificens, který vážil 60 až 110 kg a v rozpětí křídel měřil přes 8 m.
Vnější vzhled současných ptáků je velmi podobný. Liší se pouze velikostí těla, tvarem a velikostí zobáku, v délce krku a typu nohy. Většina druhů ptáků patří mezi suchozemské obratlovce se schopností aktivního letu.
